How Your Nonprofit Can Help

You don’t need to be a benefits expert. The organizations people already trust are the

ones best placed to share accurate information at the right moment and that’s what keeps eligible residents covered.

Your role

Determining eligibility and administering benefits is the job of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Your role is simpler, and just as important: help the people you already serve understand what’s changing, know what to do, and know where to go for help. Because they trust you, one short, accurate conversation can keep someone from losing coverage they actually qualify for.

What Nonprofits do:

Share what's changing, in plain language, with the people you serve.
Point people to official tools — MI Bridges and the beneficiary help line.
Watch for clients who may be affected and raise it early.
Reassure people not to ignore mail or messages from MDHHS.

What Nonprofits don't do:

Talking Points:

“If you have Medicaid through the Healthy Michigan Plan and you're between 19 and 64, some new rules start January 1, 2027 — it's worth checking now.”
“You may already meet the requirement through work, school, or volunteering, or you may be exempt. Many people won't have to do anything new.”
“The most important thing is to watch your mail and your MI Bridges account. If MDHHS asks for information, respond by the deadline.”
“Not sure if this applies to you? You can check your MI Bridges account or call the beneficiary help line at 1-800-642-3195.”
“You don't have to figure this out alone — here's where to find accurate information.”

Quick checklist

What to share:

Ask whether the person has Healthy Michigan Plan coverage and is age 19–64.
Explain the two ways to meet the requirement: a minimum monthly income, or 80 hours of approved activities in a month.
Mention that many people are exempt — caregivers, pregnancy, medical frailty, and more.
Give them the beneficiary help line: 1-800-642-3195.
Encourage them to keep their contact information current so they don't miss a notice.
